Exclusive: Finance expert warns Tottenham could swap Michelin for McDonalds this summer
Finance expert Kieran Maguire believes Daniel Levy could be setting Tottenham fans up for another summer transfer window without ‘big-name’ signings.
The Tottenham chairman caused another storm at the end of March when Spurs posted their financial statement from the 2023/24 season – a campaign without European football.
Levy stated that Tottenham would not spend beyond their means and risk the financial stability of the club. In other words, Spurs fans should not expect huge spending this summer if the club does not achieve European football for next season.
He said: “Recruitment remains a key focus, and we must ensure that we make smart purchases within our financial means. I often read calls for us to spend more, given that we are ranked as the ninth richest club in the world. However, a closer examination of today’s financial figures reveals that such spending must be sustainable in the long term and within our operating revenues.
“Our capacity to generate recurring revenues determines our spending power. We cannot spend what we do not have, and we will not compromise the financial stability of this club – indeed, our off-pitch revenues have significantly supplemented the lower football revenues this year, a testament to our diversified income strategy.”
There is one big problem with that statement – Tottenham are a long way from European qualification by the traditional route. England look likely to be handed a fifth Champions League qualification spot this season thanks to impressive form in Europe.
Considering Spurs finished fifth last campaign and Postecoglou often has success in his second season, fans would have been over the moon at this news at the start of the year. Unfortunately, the Lilywhites are currently stagnated in 14th in the Premier League table and look unlikely to break into the top half, let alone the European places.

Daniel Levy could be setting Tottenham fans up for a long summer
Finance expert Kieran Maguire believes Tottenham fans are unhappy at the fact they have to pay ‘Michelin’ prices to attend games, but are presented with ‘McDonalds’ results. He also suggests Daniel Levy’s statement could be setting up for a lack of big-name signings in the summer.
Kieran Maguire exclusively told Spurs Web: “If I was a Tottenham fan, I suspect I’d be feeling quite aggrieved about Daniel Levy’s comments about sustainable spending because there’s a case for saying the amounts that he’s charging for season tickets isn’t sustainable from a common sense point of view, given that he’s expecting you to pay Michelin star prices for your season ticket and he’s delivering the McDonald’s standard of menu on the pitch in terms of the results that you’ve seen yourself this season.
“I would be fairly annoyed, and I think it’s indicative of his lack of interpersonal and communication skills that he came out with a comment that was pretty crass.
“In terms of sustainable spending I think he [Levy] is having perhaps a bit of a dig at the likes of Chelsea who have got owners who are willing to subsidise the club. Tavistock and Daniel themselves seem reluctant to put money into Spurs to add to the budget.
“Tottenham are absolutely brilliant at bringing the money in. It has far more than doubled from the old White Hart Lane so the club has made a lot of progress in bringing the money in, and he does deserve a lot of credit for that.
“In terms of his comment, £830 million in five years, where the money coming back from player sales has been a very small fraction of that doesn’t reflect well on him, because he’s responsible for the historic spending.
“I think he’s trying to set up the fan base, effectively saying look we don’t qualify for Europe then don’t expect to see big ticket items arriving in the summer apart from the big ticket, which is going to be on the price of your season ticket.”
Spurs still have one route back to the big time next season
Regardless of Premier League position, Tottenham still have one route back into the upper echelon of European football – the Champions League. All it takes is the small matter of winning the Europa League this season.
Spurs take on Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarter-finals of the competition across two legs on Thursday 10 and Thursday 17 April. If they make it through, they would face either Lazio or Bodo/Glimt in the semi-final, before taking on Manchester United, Lazio, Rangers, or Athletic Bilbao in the final.
Tottenham would also be set to land more than £60m if they won the Europa League, as exclusively revealed to the Spurs Web by finance expert Kieran Maguire.
