'The White Lotus' Creator Mike White Revealed One Major Change He's Making for Season 4
After The White Lotus season 3 finale on April 6, there’s only one thing we know for sure about the show: Mike White will never do anything predictable.
The show’s genius creator and writer has kept us on our toes for three seasons with unexpected deaths and twists, and it looks like he plans on doing it again for a fourth with a drastic change that will shake up the formula of the show.
“For the fourth season, I want to get a little bit out of the crashing waves of rocks vernacular, but there’s always more room for more murders at the White Lotus hotels,” White said in a post-episode analysis of the season 3 finale.
While we have gotten many clues about the location, cast, and release date of The White Lotus season 4, nothing is set in stone. However, White’s comments suggest the show will move away from the beachy setting we’ve seen for the past three seasons.
In season 1, the show took us to Hawaii, season 2 was set in Italy, and season 3 was all about Thailand.
For all three seasons, The White Lotus has worked with the Four Seasons hotel chain, transforming their resorts into the setting of the hit HBO show. So which of the chain’s locations will the show go to next?
“We’re going on some locations scouting in the next couple of weeks, so we’ll know soon,” HBO drama chief Francesca Orsi told Deadline in February. “I can’t really say where we’re going to land but chances are somewhere in Europe.”
White, meanwhile, teased to The Hollywood Reporter that, after filming in Thailand, The White Lotus season 4 could be set in a location that would benefit from having a major TV show filmed there. “Where we choose to go next could be hugely impactful [to that locale]. That’s why it was so cool to shoot in Thailand,” he said. “It’s hard to go backward. Like, ‘Oh, we’ll do it in Paris!’ That feels like a cop-out.”
