VIDEO: 6-year-old found wandering alone with dog in Florida; mom, 1 other charged
DELTONA, Fla. (WFLA) – A 6-year-old girl and her dog were found wandering alone on Friday afternoon in Deltona, Florida, according to the Volusia Sheriff's Office.
Deputies responded to a call from a woman who said she saw the child walking around her front yard and then sitting down in her carport.
The woman and a neighbor brought food, water and clean clothes for the girl after she said she was hot, thirsty and hungry, the sheriff's office said.
When asked by deputies where her mom and dad were, the little girl can be heard in the video saying she was dropped off in the area because "they had to go somewhere," and she didn't know when they would be back.
Deltona Fire Rescue also responded to the scene and checked her vitals to confirm she was OK.
The girl said she doesn't attend school. Deputies later discovered her family is homeless.
The child was taken to the Volusia Family Resource Center, where her grandparents were contacted to take custody of her.
Law enforcement was able to track down the girl's mother and her boyfriend around 1 a.m. on Saturday, and both were charged with desertion of a child and abandonment of an animal.
