Tottenham fans all say the same thing about Southampton’s Tyler Dibling after seeing him live
Tottenham Hotspur fans didn’t hold back in their assessment of Southampton starlet Tyler Dibling after Sunday’s win — with many left scratching their heads at the £100m valuation slapped on the teenager.
Tottenham Hotspur and Ange Postecoglou knew exactly what was on the line on Sunday afternoon, as they welcomed a struggling Southampton side to N17.
After the setback at Stamford Bridge last Thursday, where Spurs fell short against Chelsea, there was no margin for error if they were to get back on track.
The pressure on Postecoglou continues to mount, with just five points separating Spurs from 17th-placed Wolves – questions are being asked, and they’ll keep coming unless results turn quickly.
Thankfully, Tottenham responded with a professional 3-1 win at home to the Saints, halting a worrying run and giving fans something to cling to ahead of a vital run-in.
Tottenham fans question £100m valuation of Tyler Dibling
While securing three points was the primary objective for Postecoglou and his staff, there’s little doubt that Sunday also offered a chance to take a closer look at one of Tottenham’s reported top summer targets — Tyler Dibling.
Of course, it wasn’t just the coaching staff who had eyes on him either; Spurs supporters were watching too, especially given it was the second time the teenager had come up against them this season. The verdict? Far from unanimous.
Social media was awash with mixed reactions. Some fans saw promise in Dibling and said they’d welcome the move, but most weren’t convinced — especially not at the kind of price being floated around.
One fan said: “Would happily take him, wouldn’t pay over £50M though.” Another said: “Dibling is worth about £40m with half of it being English and with young potential.”
Others were less generous. One fan commented, “Nearly created a goal in the first half, aside from that, pretty quiet? Don’t recall watching him and worrying. Certainly not a 100M player, not even 50M. I would be inclined to pass and look at other options, we don’t need more “potential” we need proven at this point.”
Another added, “Rather underwhelming. Though to be fair, hard to shine in a performance like theirs. I’ve seen enough to think he’ll be a top player, but not yet.”
There was even less patience from a few others: “mid player, bit of potential, nowhere near good enough to get in any top 8 teams starting 11, worth a punt at £25m maybe, not a penny more.”
One particularly blunt take read, “I don’t care if he scores a second half hattrick – Tottenham should steer well clear of Tyler Dibling. He looks lazy, has no pace and should have cost his team a third goal at the end of the half. Socks rolled down the ankles is always a red flag”
Stats show promise but Spurs fans demand proven quality over potential
When you strip back the noise and take a proper look at Tyler Dibling’s numbers from the match, the picture isn’t awful — but it’s nothing to shout about either.
He created one chance, finished with 94% pass accuracy after completing 33 of 35 passes, had two touches in the opposition box, played a single pass into the final third and completed two dribbles.
On the defensive side, he won two out of four tackles, came out on top in seven of 17 duels, and was dribbled past once.
So, while the raw data suggests a young player with potential, it doesn’t scream generational talent — certainly not one worth the reported £100m asking price.
It’s worth noting that Southampton’s relegation, mathematically confirmed after their defeat to Spurs, might just force their hand in lowering that figure.
And if that happens, a cut-price move for a talented 19-year-old could start to make a bit more sense.
