Mark Kerr biopic ‘The Smashing Machine’ with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson sets release date
The highly anticipated Mark Kerr biopic titled The Smashing Machine finally has a release date.
The film starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the embattled former UFC and PRIDE fighter is set to land in theaters on Oct. 3. Deadline first reported the news about the release date.
Benny Safdie, who is best known for his work on films such as Uncut Gems, directed and co-wrote the film, which also stars Academy Award nominated actress Emily Blunt, who plays Kerr’s wife Dawn Staples.
The Smashing Machine is set to go up against the Channing Tatum led film Roofman and Oz Perkins latest horror film titled The Keeper also opening on Oct. 3.
Based on a documentary of the same name, The Smashing Machine details Kerr’s rise and fall from being touted as one of the top fighters in the world to his battle with addiction later in his career.
The film also stars former Bellator heavyweight champion Ryan Bader, who actually plays UFC Hall of Famer and Kerr’s friend Mark Coleman in the biopic.
Other notable names in the film include heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk playing Russian fighter Igor Vovchanchyn, Satoshi Ishii as Enson Inoue, James Moontasri as Akira Shoji, Andre Tricoteux as Paul Varelans and former UFC heavyweight champion Bas Rutten actually playing himself in the film after he played a major part in the original documentary on Kerr.
The Smashing Machine is being produced by indie studio A24.
