Suspect killed Portland security guard, injured teen in July 2024 drive-by shooting, police say
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A suspect has been indicted for the drive-by shooting that killed a security guard and injured a teen in Southeast Portland last July.
On Wednesday, a Multnomah County grand jury indicted 28-year-old Mamadee S. Keita on murder and other charges after the shooting that claimed the life of 49-year-old Walter Mulberry, injured in the Buckman Neighborhood on July 7.
Just after 1 a.m., Portland police said Mulberry was killed in the shooting near Southeast 9th Avenue and Southeast Ankeney Street after dozens of bullets were unleashed on the street. Police said the shots came from a suspect in a moving car targeting a group of people on the sidewalk, with multiple parked cars and other objects also getting sprayed with bullets. A teenager also sustained non-life-threatening injuries and a suspect was not immediately located, officials said at the time.
Mulberry was described as a loving father by those who knew him. One relative who was present during the shooting called the incident "Horror — absolute horror."
The family has been notified of the indictment.
Keita is accused of second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, three counts of unlawful use of a weapon, 12 counts of recklessly endangering another person and possession of a loaded firearm in public.
