‘Deliver Me From Nowhere’ trailer premieres at CinemaCon: Jeremy Allen White, Jeremy Strong tease powerful Bruce Springsteen story
Emmy winners Jeremy Allen White and Jeremy Strong hit the stage at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Thursday to reveal the first trailer for the upcoming Bruce Springsteen biography Deliver Me From Nowhere. The movie, from director Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart), focuses on the recording of Springsteen’s 1982 album Nebraska and is based on Deliver Me From Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen's "Nebraska" by Warren Zanes.
“When Bruce was little, he had a hole in the floor of his bedroom,” Strong, as longtime Springsteen manager Jon Landau, says in the trailer. “It's supposed to be solid. He's supposed to be able to stand on. Bruce didn't have that.”
Against black-and-white images of a young Springsteen having some conflict with his father (played by Adolescence star and co-creator Stephen Graham), Landau continues. “Bruce is a repairman. What he's doing with this album is he's repairing that hole in his floor. He's repairing that hole in himself. Once he's done that, he's going to repair the entire world,”
The trailer ends with Strong on stage singing “Born to Run” as Springsteen and teased a fall release, presumably putting it out before Dec. 20.
Before the trailer's reveal, White called the opportunity to play Springsteen “incredible, challenging, and a dream come true.”
“I feel really lucky. We all had Bruce’s blessing on this film,” he said.
In his own prepared remarks, Strong said the relationship between Springsteen and Landau was foundational to the project. “Jon was, of course, deeply invested in Bruce as an artist, but he was also deeply invested in his friend’s happiness and well-being and his struggles with mental health,” Strong said. “I see John as the Lewis to Bruce’s Clark, and I think that the journey that they've been on together is just beautiful and unprecedented in the history of music.”
In addition to White, Strong, and Graham, the cast also includes Paul Walter Hauser, David Krumholtz, Marc Maron, Gaby Hoffmann (as Springsteen’s mother), and Odessa Young.
