Spring sunshine brings surge in pollen in Portland
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — With sunshine and warmer afternoon temperatures back in the forecast, more folks will be rushing outside to enjoy springtime activities. However, those with seasonal allergies should be prepared.
The warmer and drier pattern will cause an uptick in pollen levels that could exacerbate allergy symptoms. The pollen forecast in Portland shows the pollen count rising and staying high throughout the weekend. The main offenders will be tree pollens like alder, juniper, and birch.
High pollen levels are typical in the springtime here in the Pacific Northwest, especially when rain showers come to a pause. Rain showers are handy, helping to clear or wash out the pollen in the air. As a result, the pollen count will usually fall after a fresh rain.
Pleasant and dry conditions are likely today through much of the weekend. Daytime highs are expected to climb into the lower to mid-70s come Saturday and fall back into the 60s by Sunday and beyond.
Whether you're planning a picnic, hike, or a walk outside to catch some fresh air, it's a good idea to take precautions as the pollen count surges under the sunshine.
