‘Wicked: For Good’ trailer premieres at CinemaCon, teases epic conclusion to the Oscar-winning musical
She’s off to see the wizard.
Universal closed its blockbuster CinemaCon panel on Wednesday with the world premiere of the first trailer for Wicked: For Good.
The sequel picks up some time after the events of the first film, with Glinda (Ariana Grande) preparing to wed Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) as Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) continues her campaign against the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum).
The emotional teaser includes the songs “No Good Deed” and “For Good.”
“You’re the only friend I ever had,” Elphaba tells Glinda at the end of the trailer.
“And I have so many friends,” Glinda replies. “But you're the only one that mattered.”
The trailer, which played to great applause from the nation’s theater owners, was preceded by special appearances from Erivo, Grande, filmmaker Jon M. Chu, and producer Marc Platt.
“Our second movie deals with the consequences of the choices that were made by the characters these wonderful people play,” Chu said before the trailer premiere.
“Glinda has to really look at her reflection and discover what it means to be Glinda the Good,” Grande teased.
“And Elphaba has to determine how to use her powers for the betterment of all of Oz from exile,” said Erivo.
Chu noted this was the third consecutive year Wicked concluded the Universal presentation at CinemaCon. “Thank God it worked out,” Chu joked.
Expectations for Wicked: For Good are incredibly high. The first movie grossed over $744 million worldwide and received 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Erivo, and Best Supporting Actress for Grande. The movie won two Oscars, for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design, and both aspects remain exemplary, at least judging by the trailer.
Wicked: For Good is out in theaters on Nov. 21.
