Loving every New York minute; Saints roll past Manhattan
LOUDONVILLE, NY (NEWS10) -- Firing on all cylinders, the Siena Women’s Lacrosse team got back into their New York groove in a major way on Wednesday and nearly led wire-to-wire in a 14-8 triumph over Manhattan at Hickey Field.
Siena (3-8, 1-2 MAAC) scored a season-high in goals and its most goals scored in a game since April 17, 2024 when it won at Quinnipiac 15-12.
The Saints evened the score at 1-1 in the opening quarter on a goal by sophomore Elizabeth Wamp and briefly took the lead on a goal from Olivia Nicholson.
After the Jaspers’ Lauren Maher scored unassisted to make it 2-2, Siena went ahead for good on another Nicholson score off a feed from Cassidy Bonura with 2:50 remaining in the frame to make it 3-2 in favor of the Saints.
From there, Wamp notched her second of the day at the 1:01 mark off a pass from Dobrzynski followed by Cass Belsito’s first career score and another marker off the stick of Dobrzynski to push the advantage to 6-2 at the 10:13 mark of the second quarter.
Manhattan answered with back-to-back strikes from Ava Fernandes and Lauren Maher to cut the deficit to two before Siena responded with four consecutive goals to lead 10-4 at 5:09 in the third quarter. During the run, freshman Mia Popovich also netted her first career goal in the spurt.
Dobrzynski scored consecutive goals then added an assist at the 12:49 mark of the fourth quarter on a goal by fellow senior Kelly Logue.
Dobrzynski wasn’t done. The West Greenwich, RI native would add her fourth goal and 18th of the season at the 10:59 mark of the fourth to give Siena a 13-6 advantage.
The Saints held a heavy advantage of 17-9 in draw controls with Sydney Hannes (seven draw controls) and Cassidy Bonura (six draw controls) doing much of the work.
On defense, Siena was credited with 10 caused turnovers as Ryann Savage led the unit with three while Faye Gorman had two and Mikayla Cooke had four ground balls. Drawing her first career start in net, freshman McAllister Salter made five saves and earned her first career victory.
Shots were a big advantage as well for Siena as the Saints had a 42-19 edge overall and 29-13 for shots on target. Manhattan also committed more than double the turnovers (15-7).
Siena will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Fairfield, CT to take on Sacred Heart (4-6, 2-1 MAAC) at 1 p.m.
