Pakistan Interior Minister briefs Shehbaz Sharif on Afghan migrant deportations
Pakistan’s interior minister briefed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the ongoing deportation process of illegal Afghan migrants.
Pakistan’s Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, briefed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif about the ongoing process of deporting Afghan migrants from Pakistan. In a meeting held on April 2nd, 2025, Naqvi provided details on the efforts and actions taken to return Afghan nationals who had been living in Pakistan without legal documentation. The discussion highlighted the systematic steps being undertaken to facilitate their repatriation and the government’s broader plans for border management.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his appreciation for the security agencies’ efforts, especially during the recent Eid holidays. He acknowledged the critical role these agencies played in maintaining public order and ensuring safety in Pakistan during the festive season.
The Pakistani government has been addressing the issue of illegal migration, particularly the influx of Afghan refugees, which has been a long-standing challenge. As the deadline for the voluntary departure of undocumented Afghan migrants expired, Pakistan began actively sending back Afghan nationals residing in the country illegally. This move follows an earlier government directive to clear up the migrant population that had been living without legal authorization.
Reports suggest that over 878,972 Afghan migrants have already been deported back to Afghanistan under the government’s repatriation efforts. The deportations are part of a broader initiative to ensure compliance with immigration regulations and manage border security more effectively.
This large-scale deportation process has raised concerns regarding the capacity of Afghanistan to accommodate such a significant number of returning migrants. Many of the deported individuals face challenges reintegrating into Afghan society, especially given the difficult economic and social conditions in the country. The international community has also called for careful handling of the situation to avoid exacerbating the hardships faced by Afghan returnees.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s efforts to deport undocumented Afghan migrants are in line with national security and immigration policies, the process also underscores the ongoing challenges of migration management in the region. Both countries, along with international partners, will need to work collaboratively to address the humanitarian concerns arising from this mass repatriation.
