Millage tax renewal ensures future of Iberia Parish Library System
IBERIA PARISH, LA (KLFY) -- It is official that the Iberia Parish Library System will continue operations with the millage tax renewal passing on the March 29 election.
Marjorie Hills, the director of the library said she is, "So grateful to the people of Iberia Parish who went out and voted and who saw the value in keeping this almost 80-year institution here."
The finale tally had an 88-vote margin with 4,480 "yes" votes to 4,392 "no" votes. Before the vote, all seven of the parish libraries were in danger of ending operations. Now, because of voting results, the library system is funded for the next 10 years. This allows time for ideas for the libraries to flourish and continue their work in the community.
Erica Romero is the community relations coordinator for the library system. Romero says with the fear of closing down no longer looming over their heads, the library system can move forward in being able to plan events, improve old programs and bring in new programs.
"I started emailing performers this morning saying, all right, we're good, you know," said Romero. "So, I know for sure we could start having performers, lecturers and presenters to come in and we're going to be okay."
