New Mexico Governor Wants $10 Million for Abortion Center to Kill More Babies
New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has ignited a firestorm of controversy by tucking $10 million into a massive capital outlay bill to fund a second abortion facility in the state.
The move is drawing sharp criticism from Republicans who accuse her of prioritizing abortion over critical infrastructure needs.
The funding, buried in House Bill 450, a $1.2 billion measure to bankroll over 1,400 projects statewide, would support a new abortion center in northern New Mexico. The move comes on the heels of a similar $10 million allocation last year for an abortion facility in Las Cruces, cementing Lujan Grisham’s reputation as a radical abortion activist.
Republicans wasted no time slamming the decision.

State Rep. Cathrynn Brown, R-Carlsbad, called it a “slap in the face” to New Mexicans struggling with crumbling roads, water shortages, and underfunded law enforcement. “This is about sneaking in an agenda while our state’s real needs are ignored,” she said in a statement.
State Rep. Gail Armstrong, R-Magdalena, echoed the sentiment, arguing the funds could have addressed pressing priorities.
“We need millions for roads, water, and law enforcement—not another abortion clinic,” Armstrong told the New Mexico Sun.
The $10 million provision surfaced late in the legislative process, blindsiding some lawmakers.
Rep. Rod Montoya, R-Farmington, accused the governor of exploiting the sprawling capital outlay bill to push her agenda. “It’s a poison pill designed to force pro-life members into a corner,” he said, noting failed attempts to strip the funding during debate.
The House passed HB 450 on a 41-25 vote, largely along party lines, with Rep. Joseph Sanchez, D-Alcalde, joining Republicans in opposition. The bill now heads to the Senate, where it faces an uncertain fate before the April 11 veto deadline.
Lujan Grisham, who broke ground on the northern abortion biz last year, has defended the investment, calling killing babies essential health care.
Posts on X have amplified the outrage, with users accusing Lujan Grisham of bypassing public input. One petition circulating online urges residents to “stop the governor from opening a $10 million abortion clinic” without legislative transparency.
