Johnson's to give out free scoops for opening of new central Ohio shop
POWELL, Ohio (WCMH) -- Johnson's Real Ice Cream is celebrating the opening of another central Ohio shop with free scoops.
The Bexley-based ice cream shop will begin welcoming customers on April 17 to the new location at 50 S. Liberty St. in Powell's downtown district, the brand announced. The new storefront will mark Johnson's eighth Columbus-area shop and the second in Powell, the first of which was announced last fall and opened in March at 4290 Home Road.
"We're excited to expand further in Powell and continue sharing our family's ice cream with even more of the community," said Matt Wilcoxon, fourth-generation owner. "As we celebrate 75 years of serving up smiles, we're grateful for the support of our customers and eager to create new memories for generations to come."
To commemorate the occasion, Johnson's will open the Liberty Street location at 6 p.m. on April 17 and offer free single scoops to guests until 9 p.m. Each guest can enjoy a complimentary scoop of their favorite flavor. The first 50 customers will receive a free limited-edition 75th anniversary t-shirt. Attendees can also look forward to surprise giveaways.
The Liberty Street store will span 1,300 square feet and feature Johnson's classic ice cream flavors, along with a series of shakes, sundaes, ice cream sandwiches, cakes, pies and more.
The Home Road location greeted more than 1,500 guests on opening night, Johnson's said. The new Powell shops are two of three new Johnson's locations launching in 2025, with the third set to open in May inside a Pickerington auto garage that the company is transforming into a 1,400-square-foot ice cream parlor.
Johnson's will have tripled its central Ohio footprint in 12 months when the Pickerington store opens, after also opening three locations in 2024, one in Grandview Heights, a second in Canal Winchester and the third in Italian Village. The brand operates its original store in Bexley and other locations in Dublin and New Albany.
