Kaiser Permanente's new Clackamas campus will be Oregon's first fully-electric hospital
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — One of Kaiser Permanente’s facilities will undergo a renovation that will make it Oregon’s first fully-electric hospital.
The health care company plans to construct a new hospital tower at its Clackamas-based Sunnyside Medical Center starting in early 2026.
The “state-of-the-art” facility will be seven stories high and total around 615,000 square feet, offering additional services and updated technology like private patient rooms, telemedicine equipment and an increased emergency room capacity.
“Since opening its doors in 1975, Kaiser Permanente Sunnyside Medical Center has been a center of care excellence and innovation, where our doctors, nurses, and staff save lives, bring new lives into the world, and help patients navigate everything from minor procedures to the most complex heart surgeries,” Kaiser’s Pacific Northwest Regional President Wendy Watson said in a release.
According to Watson, the renovation will help usher the company “into the future of health care.” The fully-electric hospital is expected to reduce the system’s carbon footprint and therefore improve the air quality in the surrounding community.
Kaiser’s pre-existing Sunnyside facility will remain open until the new hospital tower makes its debut on the east side of campus in 2029. Afterwards, the current building will be replaced with more parking structure, walkways and other outdoor areas.
The company will keep the Brookside Center, which is its on-campus residential mental health treatment facility. Kaiser’s offices for medical and speciality care, and for pharmacy and imaging services, will be unaffected as well.
