These are the top 10 Oregon cities to live in, according to Travel + Leisure
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Travel + Leisure released a list on Sunday of the top 10 Oregon cities to live in -- ranging from cities with small-town charm, to places with mountain views and acreage in wine country.
The best cities list comes amid Oregon's competitive housing market, with Zillow estimating the average Oregon home value sitting just under $500,000, the outlet said.
La Grande
Marking the number one spot on the list: La Grande, with average home values at $277,988, according to Travel + Leisure.
Speaking with Kenzie Carlstrom of RE/MAX Key Properties, Travel + Leisure highlighted La Grande’s affordability, charm, and proximity to the Blue Mountains.
“La Grande is an appealing option for those seeking a slower pace of life, stunning natural surroundings, and lower home prices than many other Oregon cities,” Carlstrom told Travel + Leisure. “Plus, it’s the easiest four-hour drive to Portland; hop on I-84, and that’s it for your weekend city fix.”
Bend
Scoring the second spot on the list: Bend.
Jen Dillard -- CEO and founder of the JDRE Team affiliated with Real Broker -- calls the Central Oregon city a “paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, offering year-round recreation from skiing at Mt. Bachelor to hiking, biking, and paddling down the Deschutes River.”
According to Dillard, home prices in the city have cooled since the pandemic, with the average home price sitting over $733,000.
Salem
The third best city to live in Oregon: Salem
According to Zillow, the average home value in the state capital is $428,744.
Travel + Leisure said Salem is the best place to live for those aspiring for the “classic Pacific Northwest lifestyle” without Portland’s high prices.
The outlet highlighted local entertainment spots, including the historic Elsinore Theatre’s live music, comedy and theater performances and the Hallie Ford Museum of Art – a part of Willamette University showcasing a rotating exhibit list. The city also offers nearby biking, hiking and walking trails.
Newberg
Newberg made the fourth spot on Travel + Leisure's list, noting the city is an affordable option compared to Portland's home prices, but is still within driving distance to the Rose City.
“Newberg is the gateway to wine country, and I liken it to buying real estate in Sonoma or Napa 50 years ago,” Shannon Janssen of Coldwell Banker Bain told Travel + Leisure. “The topography is stunning with a mix of rolling hills, farmlands, and vineyards, and the town itself has a quaint little downtown with excellent restaurants and a variety of tasting rooms.”
Starter homes in Newberg run under $500,000, according to Janssen, noting the city “offers the kind of large acreage view properties that luxury buyers are looking for.”
Roseburg
Scoring the fifth spot on the list: Roseburg.
“The Umpqua Valley’s rolling vineyards, mild climate, and outdoor recreation create an idyllic place to call home,” Carlstrom told the outlet, adding that the most desirable neighborhoods include the Melrose and Hucrest areas, which offer a mix of historic estates and new homes along with riverfront properties.
The average home value in Hucrest is around $438,000 and over $614,000 in Melrose, Travel + Leisure said.
Other cities making the top 10 list include Hood River, Cedar Mill, Three Rivers, Portland and Hillsboro.
