BREAUX BRIDGE, La. (KLFY) -- A man has died in a deadly crash involving an impaired driver in St. Martin Parish.

Official said last night, shortly before 8 p.m., Louisiana police officials investigated a single-vehicle fatality crash involving a pedestrian on LA 353, just north of Rookery Road.

Officials said the crash claimed the life of 44-year-old Brad Madere of St. Martinville.

According to officials, Madere was walking on LA 353 near the southbound fog line. At the same time, 58-year-old Troy Alfred of Lafayette, was traveling south on LA 353 in a 2019 RAM 1500.

For reasons still under investigation, Madere was said to enter the southbound lane as the RAM approached. Despite the driver taking evasive action to avoid a collision, Madere was struck by the vehicle.

Officials said Madere suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. Alfred was properly restrained and uninjured during the crash.

During the investigation, officials said Alfred provided a breath sample that revealed a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit and was sent to a St. Martin Parish jail on the charges of driving while impaired and obstructed view through windshield/windows. A standard toxicology sample was also collected from Madere and submitted for analysis.

This crash remains under investigation.

Taylor Eby had three hits and drove in five runs as the Dominican University softball team raced past host William Jessup 11-2 in five innings in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday.

The Penguins dropped the second game 6-3. Eby singled in the top of the first to give the Penguins (26-20, 17-12 PacWest) a 1-0 lead. Eby singled again as part of an eight-run second inning that blew the game open then added a two-run single in the third.

Melissa Garcia also had three hits for the Penguins, driving in one and scoring twice. Tiare Guerrero paced Dominican with three hits in the second game. Dominican is set to host William Jessup for another doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday.

Prep baseball

Lucas Ghio had two hits and drove in a run as Redwood fell against Foothill 6-2 on Friday. The Giants (8-6-1) scored twice in the bottom of the second to take a 2-0 lead but Foothill scored five times in the top of the third to take the lead for good.

• Aidan Whitmore went 3 for 3 at the plate as San Marin fell to Livermore 4-2 on Friday. The Mustangs (9-3) scored twice in the top of the third inning but surrendered four runs in the bottom of the frame. Sean McGrath and Trevor Krejdovsky had RBIs for the Mustangs.

Marin Free Throws

The Marin Free Throw Competition, which ran from 2008 until 2020, is set to make a comeback this summer.

The fundraising event, which is open to people of all ages, is scheduled to take place on July 12 from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at Archie Williams High.
