Chappell Roan Is Under Fire After Touchy Comments About Motherhood
Chappell Roan is feeling the heat after saying a select group of her friends are living in hell. The “Pink Pony Club” singer appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast and spoke with host Alex Cooper about what her future personal life might look like. It’s a topic that’s been on her mind since she went back to her hometown and saw her peers married with kids.
“I don’t know when that’s gonna happen for me,” the Grammy winner said. “Like, I don’t know when that is realistic.”
“Do you want that?” Cooper asked.
Chappell Roan conceded that she might want to get married but doesn’t know if that will be an option. “Part of me is like, is it even gonna be legal to marry, like, my wife one day, you know?”
As for having kids, that’s a whole other can of worms. And no, not just because of the added struggles gay couples face when trying to start a family. It’s because she has yet to see any of the joy that can come with starting a family.
“All my friends who have kids are in hell,” she said. “I don’t know anyone … who’s like, happy and has children [under the age of 5].”
“I literally have not met anyone who’s happy, anyone who has like light in their eyes, anyone who has slept,” she continued.
And those comments did not sit right with many listeners. The “Good Luck, Babe!” singer might have been well-meaning when she shared the experiences of her friends, who probably do have bad days with young kids. And they probably don’t get as much sleep as they would like. Because the early years are hard.
As one person said, “I get it, motherhood, especially early motherhood in modern nuclear families with no supportive extended family around is a thankless miserable grind that everyone will resent you for.”
And yet, the fact that Chappell Roan was saying this as someone who doesn’t have kids was extremely upsetting to some people on X (formerly Twitter).
“[This] is a prime example of why you cannot just vent to anyone,” one person said. “Because I guarantee she has this perspective because a few of her mom friends are going through it …. May the friendships of narcissistic childless women with no sense of loyalty [never] find me.”
“Her viewpoint was SO out of touch and disappointing,” another added. “Imagine being those friends that probably had a bad day and confided in her and hearing her spin on their situation on an international podcast. So wrong and so sad. We need to celebrate motherhood.”
“This is why you only vent about parenting to other mom friends who get it,” another person agreed.
And it all circles back to the idea that “everyone will resent you” no matter how you handle motherhood. Let’s be real: If Chappell Roan said she flat-out didn’t want kids, she would get heat for being a “childless cat lady.” If she said she did want them, the bigots would come for her. And if she said the trenches of motherhood seemed like all unicorns and rainbows, she would also face backlash. You just can’t win!
