DSNY no longer giving out free compost bins in New York City
NEW YORK (PIX11) – If you waited to get a compost bin for free, the Department of Sanitation is no longer giving them out, according to 311.
The DSNY held several events between 2024 and 2025 where New York City residents could grab free small composting containers for kitchen scraps. The last giveaway was held on Feb. 12 in Jackson Heights, the DSNY website reads.
Residents were also given the opportunity to get a free outdoor composting bin as services began in their boroughs, officials told PIX11 News.
Any clearly labeled 55-gallon or less bin with a secure lid will work for composting, according to the DSNY. Property owners can order the official New York City composting decal by clicking here.
Residents can also buy a composting bin, starting at $43.47, from the DSNY here.
Fines for not composting begin on Tuesday, April 1. They range from $25 to $400 per offense, depending on the number of apartments in a building.
