Hoosick Falls to celebrate clean water with new infrastructure
HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- Hoosick Falls will be switching to a new water source to improve water quality throughout the village. At 6 p.m., village officials will be accepting new water wells, a pump house and new infrastructure.
According to village officials, the village has struggled with harmful PFAs, or Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, in the water system for years. The new system and infrastructure will provide cleaner, safer water for residents.
"A new water source and a permanent filtration system, financed by the responsible parties, is a historic and unprecedented response to PFAS water contamination, and will serve as an attainable goal for future communities," Mayor Robert Allen said.
The new water system will include two new wells and a well house approximately a mile away from the existing source. Allen said once the water is pimped, it will be sent along the new mile-long piping and tested. The water will then be treated by the Water Treatment Plant.
"Concluding this journey that began 10 years ago will be a major point in our Village’s great history," Allen continued. "We have once again shown that our community is hard-working, resilient, and able to rise up and achieve great things."
Allen said the new wells have been tested frequently and have shown no signs of PFOA or PFOS, but two low level PFA compounds have been detected. Village officials will continue to test the water to maintain safe water.
The special meeting to accept the new infrastructure will happen at the Hoosick Falls Armory, 80 Church Street. For more information on the water testing or the new source, visit the Village website.
