Tottenham blow as Premier League star appears to rule himself out of N17 move
Matheus Cunha’s latest admission about his future and a potential summer transfer comes as a major blow to Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of winning the race for the Wolves man.
Based on the reports over the last few weeks, it appears that signing a striker to compete with Dominic Solanke is one of Tottenham’s priorities heading into the summer window.
One striker at the top of Spurs’ wish list is thought to be Matheus Cunha, who is continuing his fine run of form at Wolves.
Tottenham are reportedly considering activating the £62m release clause in Cunha’s contract, but the striker’s latest confession comes as a blow to the Lilywhites.
Matheus Cunha reveals his ambitions for next season
A parting of ways between Wolves and Cunha seems inevitable this summer, with a number of top clubs likely to be attracted by the Brazilian’s release clause.
The 25-year-old has now revealed that he had a few offers to leave the Molineux Stadium in January and explained that he wants to join a club competing for titles, thus potentially ruling out a move to Spurs.
Cunha said (via The Guardian): “I had a lot of offers but I wouldn’t feel well if I had done it. Some things you can’t control but I couldn’t leave the club in the middle of the season, in a difficult situation, in the relegation zone.
“Now, we’re close to achieving our goal [of staying up]. But I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential.”
Can Tottenham convince Cunha of their ambition?
One would think that Spurs would have to win the Europa League and secure Champions League qualification to have any chance of winning the race for the Wolves man.
Even then, it might be difficult for Ange Postecoglou’s men to convince the former Atletico Madrid star to come to N17 as reports indicate that the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea are also very keen on signing Cunha.
