Gold medalist, Amit Elor, runs Girls Wrestling camp
TROY, NY (NEWS10) -- Gold medal winner in Women's Wrestling at the Paris Games, Amit Elor, was in Troy this weekend running the Northeast Women's Wrestling Camp for Varsity Girls wrestlers.
The camp spanned 3 days at Curby Training Center in Troy, with Elor in attendance on Saturday and Sunday. The World Champion led 4 training sessions across the 2 days, running the wrestlers through drills, giving advice, answering questions and signing autographs at a meet and greet on Saturday.
Elor won the gold medal in the 68-kilogram freestyle category in Paris this past summer, becoming the youngest American wrestler to win gold at just 20 years old.
The World Champ was thrilled with the turnout at this weekend's camp.
"I wasn't expecting to see this many girls in one room," said Elor. "It's always a joy for me to coach, share wrestling, but it's especially special when there's this many girls in one room. I've been excited about this for quite a while when I heard about this opportunity."
The sport of Women's Wrestling is growing quickly, in 2025 the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) held the first Girls Wrestling state championship at MVP arena. The sport is growing beyond New York as well, something that Elor is glad to see.
"It's just grown so much," said Elor. "A few months ago, it was accepted to the NCAAs, as I think its 91st championship sport. So, it's a really big deal, especially with all the girls that are dreaming about wrestling in college. As a girl who grew up wrestling only boys, it's so special to see how many girls like wrestling."
