Tottenham Hotspur involved in six-horse summer race for prolific striker
Tottenham Hotspur will have to overcome competition from five other Premier League sides if they are to sign a prolific striker on a free transfer this summer.
There is no doubt that Jonathan David is going to be one of the hottest properties of the summer transfer window.
The Canadian international has been one of the most prolific strikers across Europe for the last four years, and he is set to be available on a free transfer as his contract at Lille runs out in June.
It was reported last week that Tottenham are engaged in ‘active and concrete negotiations’ with David regarding a free transfer to N17 this summer.
Now a fresh update has suggested that the striker has made up his mind to leave Lille on a free transfer, but the competition for his services is thought to be heating up in the Premier League.
Tottenham are one of six Premier League clubs interested in Jonathan David
Inews have now revealed that Newcastle United are the latest club to enter the race for David’s signature ahead of the summer.
The Magpies join Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, West Ham, Chelsea and Liverpool, who have already expressed an interest in securing the 25-year-old’s services.
In fact, it is alleged that all six of these clubs have now spoken to David’s representatives regarding a switch the England. Additionally, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and Juventus are also keen on winning the race for the former Gent man.
However, as things stand, none of these clubs have held advanced discussions with the striker and none of them have made any formal offers to the player.
Tottenham tried to sign Jonathan David in January
Inews say that Spurs tried to steal a march on the competition and land David in January, but the 25-year-old turned down the move, opting to see out the rest of his contract at Lille.
The report backs Tottenham to revisit their interest in David but suggests that Man United and Liverpool might be prioritising other options over the Canadian.
However, West Ham are very much still in the race, with the striker said to have been impressed with Graham Potter’s plans at the London Stadium.
