Sports Briefs: Redwood baseball crushes win over Vintage
Miles Harrison had a solid all-around day to help Redwood High to a 9-3 home win over Vintage in Saturday’s non-league baseball contest. Harrison doubled and was hit by a pitch, scored a run and had two RBIs with his bat. He also made eight of the 21 putouts for the Giants, who recorded a double play.
Lucas Ghio and Theo Trono each doubled and had two RBIs, with Trono also scoring twice for the Giants (5-5-1, 4-4 MCAL). Kaelin Christman was 3-for-3 and scored a run, and Randall Given had two RBIs.
- Tamalpais High’s pitchers wrapped up a solid week with Saturday’s 3-1 home victory over non-league foe De Anza. Scott Olinger and Hank Ballard combined on a two-hitter against DeAnza. The Red-tailed Hawks’ hurlers haven’t issued a walk in three games this week. Will Gensler doubled, drove in a run and stole a base, while Aidan Dodge had a hit and an RBI for Tam (10-3, 5-1 MCAL).
- Junior Wyatt Koenig threw a complete-game two-hitter as Archie Williams shut down Maria Carrillo, 7-0, in Saturday’s non-league matchup. Koenig struck out seven and walked one. He was backed by a solid Peregrine Falcon defense as Mason Thongnopneua had 10 putouts and helped turn a double play. Junior Jake Barnes was 1-for-3 at the plate, with a walk and a fielders choice, as he scored twice and drove in three runs. Senior Henry Hanavan had three RBIs and a run scored with a hit and a walk for the Falcons (6-6, 4-4).
Boys mountain biking
Archie Williams High rider Simon Hewett raced neck-and-neck with Caden Kroettinger of Spartans Composite for three laps to finish in a virtual dead heat, with Hewett narrowly taking first place at the Exchequer XC Redwood/Repack Regional at La Grange on Saturday.
Hewett finished in 1 hour, 7 minutes, 31.69 seconds for the micro-second win, which gave him an extra nine series points over second-place Kroettinger.
Redwood’s Dylan Nofziger (1:08:06.45) placed fourth, with San Marin’s Te’Ah Hirschfeld (1:09:35.51) sixth. The Peregrine Falcons’ Dylan Donner (1:09:58.66) finished eighth.
Girls mountain biking
Redwood High’s Charlotte Philkill claimed third place to lead a group of Marin riders at the Exchequer XC Redwood/Repack Regional at La Grange on Saturday.
Philkill rode strong on the third and final lap to finish the race in 1 hour, 21 minutes, 54.02 seconds. Archie Williams’ Vesper Klausner (1:22:42.60) placed fourth, followed by the Tam duo of Johanna Nesbit (1:23:46.39) and Jo Moore (1:24:06.01) in fifth and sixth, respectively. Redwood’s Ava Scott took eighth, while teammate Ginger Howard was 11th.
College softball
Dominican University powered up at the plate to sweep Saturday’s doubleheader with Menlo.
Kate Tobola and Alicia Garcia both homered as Dominican beat Menlo, 10-2, in the opening game. Tobola and Kelissa Lee each had three RBIs for the Penguins.
Lee homered and had a pair of RBIs, while Taylor Eby doubled and drove in two runs in a 9-0 victory over Menlo to cap the sweep.
Women’s lacrosse
Julianne Lane scored a pair of goals in Dominican University’s 18-8 road loss to Rockhurst in Kansas City, MO., on Saturday. The Penguins (9-1) also got goals from Sydney Gunnerson, Kyra Evans and Taylor Pieri. The Penguins continue their four-game tour of Missouri on Monday against Missouri Western State.
Girls swimming
Tamalpais High’s Sophia Uhlhorn-Thornton and Addison Everage were double-winners as the Red-tailed Hawks beat Novato, 138-43, in Mill Valley on Friday.
The Hawks went 1-2-3 in the 200 individual medley, with winner Annika Hakes leading teammates Layney Octavio and Angelina Mauzy. Uhlhorn-Thornton won the 50 freestyle, leading teammates Audrey Lowell and Elle Philp, while Everage won the 100 back ahead of Sabine Barringer and Sarah Kemper. Tam’s Demi Hall won the diving, followed by Maisy Tommei and Natalie Dean.
Dylan Hayes secured the only win for the Hornets, touching first in the 100 breaststroke.
Boys swimming
Tamalpais High went deep for a 109-40 victory over Novato on Friday in Mill Valley. Freshmen Raymond Cao (200 IM, 100 back) and Jasper Feldman (50 free, 100 free) were double winners for the Red-tailed Hawks, as was junior Max Kolesnikov (100 fly, 500 free). Leo Hernandez (diving) and Jackson Burt (100 breast) earned wins for the Hornets.
Women’s tennis
Sofia Acuna, Deepalakshmi Vanaraja, Astrid Craig, Logan Koitka and Gina Dudley won singles matches as Dominican University beat Jessup, 7-0, Saturday. The Penguins (12-3) wrap up the regular season next week with matches against UC Santa Cruz, Menlo and Academy of Art.
Boys tennis
San Domenico edged Bay, 4-3, in Friday’s Bay Counties League match, with a pair of singles wins and doubles wins. The Panthers’ Toby Sadzeck won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, and Jack Kabat won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. San Domenico’s No. 2 doubles team of Mark Phumiwasana and Jeevan Raghupathy won 6-0, 6-4, and the No. 3 duo of Harrison Seay and Erich Hajek Linares won 6-1, 6-3.
- Diego Castillo clinched the match for Tam with a win atop the singles ladder, and Mason Dali held on for a tiebreaker win as the Red-tailed Hawks beat Novato, 6-1, in Mill Valley on Saturday. Castillo beat the Hornets’ Diego Seligman, 6-1, 6-2, to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead and the win. Dali then completed a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win over Miles Harris at No. 3 singles. Alex Kirsten earned a three-set win for the Hornets at No. 2 singles.
- San Marin got a pair of singles wins and split doubles to secure the match win over Branson before Friday’s contest was suspended. The Mustangs led 4-2 with the No. 1 singles match left to be completed at a later date. Alexander Christfort and Shawn Bested both earned three-set wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Branson’s Griffin Cooper won in straight sets at No. 2 singles.
Boys volleyball
MCAL teams were 1-for-7 at Saturday’s NorCal Tournament in Windsor, with Novato earning a three-set win over Saint Mary’s. The Hornets beat the Panthers, 14-25, 31-29, 15-13. Novato suffered two-set losses to Head Royce, Windsor and St. Patrick-St. Vincent of Vallejo.
Terra Linda lost 2-0 to Vacaville Christian and Saint Mary’s, while Tam fell in straight sets to Ben Holt College Prep.
- Sophomore setter Brooks Englert and sophomore outside hitter Ryder Martinez stood out as Novato prevailed 25-22, 25-20, 32-30 against Marin Catholic on Friday.
