Over 170 girls attend 11th annual Girls in STEM event in Troy
TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Young women came together for a morning of science, math and technology at the 11th annual Girls in STEM event at Hudson Valley Community College on Saturday. Girls in grades four through eight were invited to the conference, which ran from 8:30 a.m. through 11:30 a.m.
Located inside the college's Bulmer Telecommunications Center, attendees were able to work with several interactive workshops designed to get the young women interested in and confident about pursuing science- and technology-based careers. The workshops, which were led by STEM industry professionals and educators, featured building, robotics, electrical work, anatomy, virtual reality and more.
More than 170 girls reportedly attended the conference. Local welder, builder and multidimensional artist Tori Rodriguez also served as the keynote speaker.
"In a recent study, UNESCO noted that women make up only 35% of STEM graduates globally," said Officer in Charge Louis Coplin. "Events like Girls in STEM aim to change that statistic by finding impactful ways to help young girls feel confident about pursing STEM-based education and careers."
