Fulham star reveals he almost joined Tottenham but Jose Mourinho sacking killed deal
An experienced Premier League defender has revealed that he came close to joining Tottenham Hotspur a few years ago, but the move eventually fell through due to a change of management at the North London club.
Tottenham Hotspur have had more hits than misses when it comes to the centre-backs they have signed over the last few years.
Both Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have shown that they are up there with the best in the Premier League when they are fit and firing, but their injury records are a matter of concern to the North London club.
It turns out that around the time Tottenham signed Romero, they came close to landing a centre-back, who has thrived since his move to England back in 2020.
Joachim Andersen reveals Jose Mourinho wanted him at Spurs
The player in question is Joachim Andersen, who has made 156 appearances in the Premier League, during his time at Crystal Palace and Fulham.
The 28-year-old, who has been capped 41 times by Denmark, has now revealed that Mourinho was keen to bring him to Tottenham Hotspur.
However, Andersen explained that his switch to N17 fell through as Mourinho’s successor, Nuno Espirito Santo, was not a fan of him.
The Fulham man told Arbejdstitel Podcast: “When I was at Fulham (on loan during the 2020-21 season), I had spoken to Tottenham.
“It was actually pretty close to being finalised with a contract and stuff like that. It was when Mourinho was the coach actually, but then a new coach came in who didn’t want me, and then it died.”
Will Tottenham spend big on a centre-back this summer?
It has been widely reported that Cristian Romero may leave Tottenham this summer in search of Champions League football.
If the Argentine does leave, it has been suggested that Spurs may turn their attention towards Crystal Palace’s March Guehi, who they have allegedly failed with a move for in January.
If Romero does leave, Tottenham will undoubtedly need to invest in a top-class centre-back, particularly given the club cannot rely on Van de Ven to remain fit throughout the season.
