Shots fired near Central Park Community Cleanup in Topeka
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Topeka police were called to action early Saturday morning in response to shots being fired near the Central Park Community Cleanup event.
Topeka Police Department Chief Chris Vallejo said during a press conference that around 9:15 a.m. on March 29 police responded to gunshots near the Central Park Community Cleanup. Vallejo said people, including TPD officers, were volunteering for the cleanup event when they heard multiple gunshots.
Officers reportedly saw a black Honda passenger car leaving the area at a high rate of speed. The TPD located the vehicle a short time later near the intersection of Southeast Hudson Boulevard and Southeast 19th Street and took the driver into custody without incident.
Witnesses told police they saw the occupants of the Honda and another red vehicle exchanging gunfire near the intersection of Southwest 16th Street and Fillmore and Southwest Fillmore Street. Officers located numerous shell casings at the scene but did not find any gunshot victims.
Police continue to investigate the incident. People who have tips are encouraged to call the TPD at 785-368-9407 or get in touch with Shawnee County Crime Stoppers to leave an anonymous tip online or by calling 785-234-0007.
