Opinion: Tottenham should use Atletico Madrid interest in Cristian Romero to secure player swap
It’s shaping up to be a massive summer for Spurs, with both incomings and outgoings expected to dominate the headlines. But with Atletico Madrid circling around two key Tottenham players – Cristian Romero and Rodrigo Bentancur – could the club take advantage of the situation and arrange a swap deal?
This summer transfer window is already shaping up to be a busy one for Spurs, with at least two signings likely to be made.
Tottenham have an obligation to buy Kevin Danso for £21 million, while there is a £45.7 million option to sign Mathys Tel should they choose to trigger the clause.
On the outgoing front, we’ve already identified ten players who Tottenham should look to move on, and some departures are all but certain.
Timo Werner’s disappointing loan spell means he is set to return to RB Leipzig, while Manor Solomon could join Leeds United if they secure promotion back to the Premier League.
Bryan Gil, despite his ongoing injury struggles, is still being linked with a move to Girona, reinforcing the likelihood of several exits from Hotspur Way in the coming months.
Atletico Madrid’s interest in Cristian Romero and Rodrigo Bentancur
While it’s no surprise to see certain names expected to leave Tottenham, few would have anticipated Cristian Romero or Rodrigo Bentancur being in the conversation. Yet, recent reports suggest both players could be on the move.
The Argentine centre-back, in particular, has been making headlines. Romero is reportedly open to leaving Spurs, driven by his desire to play Champions League football next season.
Atletico Madrid have emerged as a potential destination for Romero, with reports indicating that initial contact has already been made with his representatives.
Bentancur, meanwhile, has endured a frustrating season. Once one of Spurs’ standout midfielders under Antonio Conte, the Uruguayan has struggled to replicate that form since returning from injury.
With Bentancur’s contract situation at Spurs still unresolved, some Tottenham fans believe it would make more sense to cash in on Bentancur rather than offer him a new deal.
Of course, Atletico Madrid are said to be monitoring the situation closely, further fuelling speculation over his future.
Could Tottenham negotiate a swap deal for Conor Gallagher?
Losing either of these players, particularly Romero, would be a significant blow. The centre-back has a wealth of experience, having won the World Cup and Copa America with Argentina, and remains one of the top defenders in Tottenham squad.
However, if Spurs are to part ways with one of them, Bentancur seems the more logical choice. Given Atletico’s interest, Tottenham could explore a creative solution—using him as part of a swap deal.
A potential move could see Bentancur head to Madrid while Spurs bring in Conor Gallagher, a player Tottenham has been linked with in the past.
Given that Gallagher only joined Atletico last summer, Daniel Levy and co. would likely need to include a cash sum to sweeten the deal. Perhaps a package of Bentancur plus £20 million would be a fair trade for both clubs.
For Tottenham Hotspur, it would mean offloading a player who has struggled this season and replacing him with a midfielder eager to prove himself in England again after his Chelsea departure. It’s a move that could work for all parties involved—if Levy is willing to play his cards right.
