Tottenham Hotspur told rehiring Mauricio Pochettino would be a risk
As speculation continues to run rife over the future of Ange Postecoglou, former Tottenham right-back Alan Hutton has explained why the North London club would be taking a huge gamble by re-appointing Mauricio Pochettino.
It has been reported over recent weeks that Ange Postecoglou might have to win the Europa League to save his job as the pressure continues to grow on the Australian.
Various outlets have claimed that Andoni Iraola, Thomas Frank and Marco Silva are the top candidates to replace Postecoglou in the Tottenham hot seat this summer.
However, last week, Mauricio Pochettino admitted that he still has unfinished business at Tottenham, which has fueled speculation over a possible return to N17 this summer.
Alan Hutton has doubts if a Tottenham return will work for Mauricio Pochettino
Hutton acknowledged that Tottenham perhaps made a mistake by sacking Pochettino in 2019 and suggested that Daniel Levy should have backed the Argentine with the signings he needed at the time.
However, the pundit admitted that he has his doubts over whether a return to North London will work for the US head coach, opining that Tottenham will be taking a huge gamble by going back to their former manager.
When asked if Tottenham should swap Postecoglou for Mauricio Pochettino if they had the option to do it, the Scot told Betway: “Possibly. You always get people who say they’re never really too sure what to expect if you come back a second time. I always think about Pochettino’s tenure and the fact that they got to the Champions League final.
“I just felt if they dipped into their pockets then and splashed out on a few experienced players to add to the squad they had, they could have really kicked on. But they decided not to do that and went down a different avenue, so that was a bit of a shame.
“That being said, he probably feels that he’s still got a lot to give. He’s probably left that Spurs situation not how he would want to, so I think that could be something that could work moving forward. However, I think every appointment is a risk, and it’s also a risk going back.”
Spurs would have to break the bank to bring Pochettino home
The former Spurs manager took over as the head coach of the US Men’s National Team back in September of last year and he has been tasked with leading the country into their home World Cup next year.
It has been reported over recent days that Pochettino is protected by a release clause of $25m (£19.3m). That means that Daniel Levy will have to spend handsomely if he wants to bring the 53-year-old through the door before the summer of 2026.
