San Rafael man dies in crash during pursuit
A San Rafael man died in a crash Friday after being pursued by a Marin County sheriff’s deputy.
The driver was Ulizer Gramajo-Reyes, 22, authorities said.
The chase started at about 3 a.m. when the deputy saw Gramajo-Reyes driving recklessly near the corner of Andersen Drive and Bellam Boulevard in San Rafael, according to the sheriff’s office. The driver did not pull over for the deputy and fled at a high speed, sheriff’s Deputy Stephanie Ware said.
A few minutes later, Gramajo-Reyes crashed into a tree and was ejected from the vehicle, Ware said. Authorities pronounced him dead at the crash site.
Gramajo-Reyes was the only person in the vehicle.
The Marin County Sheriff’s Office, following its protocol for deaths involving its staff, requested an independent investigation from other agencies. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office Coroner Bureau is conducting the death investigation.
