Sports Briefs: Redwood tennis carves out win over TL
Redwood High boys tennis beat Terra Linda, 5-2, Friday as the Giants swept doubles play in a match postponed from Thursday by rain.
The Giants split singles play, with wins from Will Greenwald and Owen Adams and No. 1 and No. 3, respectively. Trojans freshman Aryaveer Singh earned a 4-6, 6-2, 12-10 victory at No. 2 singles, and En-Yu Liu won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.
Girls lacrosse
Host Tam High edged a determined Marin Catholic squad, 12-11, in Thursday’s MCAL showdown. Junior Sarah Cormier led the Red-tailed Hawks (7-2-1, 3-0 MCAL) with four goals and Tessa Cohen scored three.
Brooklyn Hatch led Tam’s draw unit to a 14-12 advantage and scored two goals with two assists. Ellie McEvilley had one goal and three assists and Quinlin Dayton scored two goals against a staunch Marin Catholic defense. Senior goalie Jamie Lemberg had seven saves in the Tam net.
Marin Catholic senior and Colorado College commit Elsa Greene led the Wildcats (8-3, 4-1) with six goals and one assist.
Tam has a date with defending MCAL champion Redwood (8-2, 2-0) on Tuesday in a meeting between two undefeated league powerhouses.
- Redwood rolled past Archie Williams, 16-1, on Thursday to extend the Giants’ streak to three games ahead of Friday’s non-league contest with San Ramon Valley. The Peregrine Falcons (0-6, 0-4) will try to earn their first win of the season on Tuesday against San Rafael.
- Freshman Izzy Coucoules scored five goals, while junior Abby Bartholo netted three goals and three assists along with eight draw controls to power San Marin to a 17-6 victory over crosstown rival Novato on Thursday. Junior Alex Chamberlain added three goals and senior Lucy Cravens notched two goals and three assists for the Mustangs (4-3, 2-1). Ella Gill, Peyton Chamberlain, Caitlin Burke and Maddy Brackett rounded out the scoring.
- Branson got off to a fast start for a six-goal advantage at halftime, then held on for a 14-6 road victory over non-league foe Rancho Cotate. The Bulls (7-2, 1-2) get back to league play on Tuesday against Novato (0-3-1, 0-3).
Boys volleyball
Senior Beckett Shewey racked up 20 kills and seven aces as Redwood (13-2, 10-0 MCAL) rallied past host Tam, 3-2, on Thursday evening. The Giants dropped the first two sets before recovering for a 22-25, 22-25, 25-16, 25-7, 25-7 victory over the Hawks (7-5, 6-2).
- San Marin avenged a February loss with Thursday’s 3-1 victory over host Marin Catholic (3-6, 3-6) as the Mustangs (2-18, 1-9) earned their first league win of the season.
- Terra Linda battled to a 3-0 win over rival San Rafael on Thursday. The Trojans (7-6, 6-3) were the models of consistency in a 25-18, 25-18, 25-11 victory over the Bulldogs (1-8, 1-8).
- Host Novato dropped the opening set, but recovered quickly for a 3-1 victory over Archie Williams (6-13, 6-4) on Thursday. The Hornets (7-8, 4-5) picked up a clutch 17-25, 26-24, 26-24, 25-18 win.
College baseball
Adrian Ruiz and Caden Santa Maria had a pair of timely hits, while Derek Bartram and Kisho Li Kircher each added a solo homer as College of Marin earned a 10-4 home win over Napa on Thursday.
Bartram, a Novato High grad, was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs, while Redwood grad Danil Wells was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Archie Williams grad Gilbert Roth hit an RBI single in the seventh, then scored on a sac fly.
- Novato’s Josh Martin doubled, scored twice and drove in a run for Santa Rosa Junior College in Thursday’s 24-3 triumph over host American River. The Bear Cubs (26-1, 13-1) will go for the three-game sweep as they host American River on Saturday.
Men’s lacrosse
Dominican Univeristy opened its three-game tour of the mountain states Friday with a 13-8 victory over Adams State. Freshman Chase Pacenta led the way for Dominican as he tallied four goals, while dishing out two assists. Penguins junior Tanner Ennis netted three goals, while also dishing out two assists. Dominican (2-6, 2-3 PacWest) travels to Salt Lake City for Sunday’s contest with Westminster, which upended the Penguins, 15-9, in San Rafael on March 17.
