Democrat Says Killing Babies in Abortions Saves Money
A Colorado Democrat is facing massive criticism for promoting killing babies in abortions because “birth is too expensive.”
Colorado Democrats are pushing a controversial legislative agenda that would expand abortion, including taxpayer-funded abortions for low-income women and unrestricted abortions up to birth, arguing that killing babies would save the state money in the long run.
A bill pending before the Colorado legislature would require taxpayers to cover abortions for women on Medicaid, with proponents claiming it promotes “equity and fairness in health care” while also being fiscally prudent.

“A birth is more expensive than an abortion,” said state Rep. Julie McCluskie, D-Dillon and House speaker, during a recent committee hearing. She argued that funding abortions would reduce costs associated with childbirth and subsequent care, positioning the policy as a cost-saving measure for the state.
The proposal, Senate Bill 183, passed the state Senate earlier this month and cleared its first House hurdle this week on a party-line vote, with no Republican support. Democrats, who hold a strong majority in both chambers, estimate the measure could lead to the state funding up to 7,000 abortions annually.
Meanwhile, another legislative effort underscores Colorado’s permissive stance on abortion.
Last week, Democrats blocked a bill that would have imposed regulations on late-term abortion facilities, effectively preserving the state’s policy of allowing abortions up to the moment of birth with no limits. Critics, including pro-life advocates, pointed to the case of Alexis “Lexi” Lynn Arguello, an 18-year-old who died in February from an amniotic fluid embolism following a 22-week abortion at a Planned Parenthood in Fort Collins. Witnesses testified in favor of House Bill 1252, which aimed to enhance safety measures, but it failed to advance.
Opponents argue the measures prioritize cost over human life.
“This is about killing babies to save a buck,” said a spokesperson for Colorado Right to Life, condemning the taxpayer-funding proposal. Data cited by pro-life groups indicate heightened risks in late-term abortions, including a 7.2 deaths per 100,000 rate from amniotic fluid embolism at 21 weeks or later, compared to negligible risks earlier in pregnancy.
