Tottenham ‘initiate contacts’ to sign highly-rated free agent from Bundesliga
Tottenham Hotspur have made advanced towards signing a Bundesliga-winning centre-back after being handed a golden chance due to the hesitation of Barcelona.
Even though the summer transfer window is still two and a half months away, the speculation regarding Tottenham Hotspur’s potential business is already starting to gather pace.
A couple of days ago, we relayed a report which said that Tottenham are ready to battle Barcelona for Jonathan Tah’s services as the centre-back edges closer to a free agency.
Now, a big update has emerged about Spurs’ pursuit of the Bayer Leverkusen man, with the Lilywhites looking to jump on an opportunity they have been handed.
Tottenham make contact with Jonathan Tah
Fichajes have now claimed that Tottenham are looking to bolster their backline this summer and have identified Tah as a ‘key piece to solidify the project’.
The report confirms that the experienced centre-back has turned down the option to sign a new deal at Leverkusen and looks set for a free transfer this summer.
It is revealed that his preferred destination is Barcelona, but given the Catalan club’s financial issues, they are still evaluating their options. This has not only opened the door to Tottenham, but also Liverpool, who are said to be big fans of Tah.
In fact, the outlet adds that both Premier League clubs have now made contact with the 29-year-old regarding a switch to England.
Why Tottenham’s interest in centre-backs is a worrying sign
Spurs are not short of centre-backs right now, especially since the arrival of Kevin Danso from Lens in January.
The continuing speculation linking Tottenham with a move for various centre-backs suggests that a key player might potentially be on his way out this summer.
This comes amidst reports that Cristian Romero is open to leaving Spurs this summer in search of Champions League football.
