Long delays on M1 near Luton airport after crash involving three cars, two lorries and a van
A stretch of the M1 was shut in Bedfordshire after a serious crash involving two lorries, a van and three cars.
Drivers were caught in a road closure near Luton Airport after a multi-vehicle collision on the northbound carriageway between junction J11 (Luton) and J11a (Houghton Regis) shortly after 9am.
It involved two trucks, a van and three cars, an Inrix traffic alert says.
Several people were treated for minor injuries, the police said.
A spokesperson from East of England Ambulance Service told Metro: ‘Two ambulances and an ambulance officer vehicle were sent to the scene.
‘Two patients who had sustained minor injuries were transported to the Luton and Dunstable Hospital for further assessment and treatment.’
While the motorway has since reopened, there are still long delays near Luton northbound.
‘There will be delays as recovery takes place, and we would encourage drivers to seek alternative routes where possible,’ the police warned.
All emergency services are on the scene and traffic officers are attending to help move trapped vehicles within the closure.
National Highways told motorists to allow extra journey time due to the collision.
National Highways said: ‘Traffic which is caught within the closure will be turned around from the rear of the queue & directed off the motorway at J11. Please await instruction.’
Queuing traffic is stretching back past junction 10 for Luton Airport.
We approached Bedfordshire Police and the ambulance service for a comment.
