Mets Bats Struggle in Opening Day Loss to Astros
An Opening Day loss always stings, but remember, Mets fans, they started 0-5 last year.
The Mets lost their season opener to the Astros 3-1, struggling to string together enough offense despite several opportunities.
Juan Soto’s Mets debut got off to a promising start when he singled in his first at-bat. He also showed off his magical eye at the plate, walking twice – that is, until Soto chased a pitch way off the plate to end the game with the tying runs on base.
Starter Clay Holmes lasted 4 2/3 innings, giving up five hits, four walks, and three runs (two earned) with four strikeouts. He was hurt by a Luisangel Acuña throwing an error on a double play ball that cost the Mets a run.
“Gave them just enough baserunners to kind of create some traffic there,” Holmes said postgame. “I think if those walks were limited, we’d have a lot better chance to win that game.”
Despite only six hits, five of which were singles, the Mets had plenty of chances to put up runs. After a Francisco Lindor sacrifice fly to make it 3-1 in the ninth, Soto struck out with two men on. Earlier, Luis Torrens was thrown out at third base trying to advance on a wild pitch with Soto at the plate.
On the bright side, the Mets’ bullpen was solid. Huascar Brazobán and Danny Young combined for 3.1 scoreless innings to keep the Mets close.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Despite the strikeout to end the game, Soto had a promising Mets debut, reaching base three times with a single and two walks.
“For me, it was a good experience. These guys are amazing,” Soto said after the game. “We’ve been having a good time since spring training, so we’ve just got to bring that all the way.”
UP NEXT
The Mets continue their three-game set in Houston on Friday at 8:10 PM ET. Tylor Megill will take the hill against righty Hunter Brown.
Megill went 4-5 last year with a 4.05 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 91 strikeouts in 78 innings.
