Lucy the therapy dog who 'brings a lot of joy' competing for 'Pet of the Year'
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Lucy, a 4-year-old English Labrador Retriever, has become a local hero, spreading joy and comfort throughout Portland as a therapy dog.
For nearly two years, Lucy has been visiting hospitals, schools, and libraries, bringing smiles and relief to those in need.
“She’s such a calm, patient dog, and she really loves people," said Tracy Stout, Lucy’s owner. "I just wanted to share that with the world."
As a "pandemic pup" turned therapy dog, Lucy has made a significant impact. Tracy keeps her busy with weekly visits to various locations, including the Catlin Gabel school in Southwest Portland, where students eagerly await her visits.
"I’m really excited to see her," said Olivia Cole, a 7th grader at Catlin Gabel. "I immediately want to go up to her and pet her."
Another student, Jia Khamar, described how Lucy helps calm her on tough days. "She brings a lot of joy and calmness when you’re having a hard day. I love dogs, and she’s just always there."
All of Lucy's hard work has earned her a spot in the running for Pet of the Year.
The competition raises funds for Pet Partners, a nonprofit that supports mental health therapy programs using therapy animals in schools, hospitals, and other settings.
Tracy recalls one of the most touching moments of their journey, reflecting on a visit to a person in their final days.
“I was really glad to be able to give him that visit with Lucy before he died,” she said, holding back tears. “That was very touching.”
Though Lucy's impact is undeniable, Tracy hopes the competition will bring more awareness to the importance of therapy dogs in supporting people through difficult times.
Even if Lucy doesn't win the national title, Tracy remains proud of her companion.
“She’s a very good dog,” said Olivia Cole.
Lucy visits locations three days a week, staying no more than two hours at a time, as Tracy still works full-time.
And when the visits are over, Lucy takes plenty of naps to recharge.
Voting for Pet of the Year is open now through April 14th. Lucy the Therapy Dog's campaign has more information.
