Tottenham learn the exact cost of hiring Mauricio Pochettino this summer
As rumours continue to circulate regarding a sensational Tottenham return for Mauricio Pochettino, a fresh report has now shed light on exactly how much Spurs have to pay to poach the Argentine away from his current job with the United States national team.
As the speculation continues to run rife over Ange Postecoglou’s future, one of the club’s former managers has been making some curious comments, which have fuelled the rumours of a possible return to N17.
Last week, Mauricio Pochettino admitted that he still dreams of returning to Tottenham, remarking that he has unfinished business at the club.
However, he only took over as USA’s head coach in September of last year and getting him out of that job before next year’s World Cup is expected to prove very challenging.
How much Tottenham would have to pay to re-hire Mauricio Pochettino
Last week, ESPN reporter Jeff Carlisle suggested that Pochettino’s release clause may be worth “tens of millions”, thus making it very difficult for anyone to poach him before next year’s World Cup.
Now, BBC Sport have now revealed the exact details of the 53-year-old’s contract and explained exactly how much Daniel Levy would have to pay to re-appoint the former Spurs manager.
The outlet says that Pochettino is currently on an annual salary of $6m (£4.6m) but the break clause in his contract is said to be worth in the region of $25m (£19.3m).
The report adds that the compensation is “one of the biggest” of any managers in the history of the sport, an amount not dissimilar to the one Chelsea paid to Brighton for Graham Potter in 2022.
How US soccer feel about Pochettino’s Spurs return rumours
Over the last week, some outlets have floated the possibility that Tottenham might not have to pay the release clause to sign Pochettino, given poor the USMNT’s results have been under him.
However, just two days ago, journalist Ben Jacobs revealed the US Soccer Federation does not fear losing Pochettino, and they fully expect him to remain in charge until the summer of 2026.
