Alex Bregman Explains Relationship With Red Sox Star Rafael Devers
Alex Bregman’s arrival to the Boston Red Sox was followed by debate and drama.
It all started when Rafael Devers unequivocally said he wouldn’t move off third base to make way for Bregman, who won a Gold Glove at the position in 2024. That led to speculation about what the Red Sox were going to do with their two star players while Devers remained sidelined and reportedly contemplated asking for a trade.
Devers ultimately softened his stance and took over the designated hitter role, which Red Sox manager Alex Cora officially revealed Wednesday.
A situation like that could have caused tension and a potential rift between Bregman and Devers. Bregman explained that’s not the case as the two Red Sox teammates are on good terms.
“It’s been great,” Bregman said of his relationship with Devers to NESN’s Tom Caron during Tuesday’s exhibition game in Mexico. “Obviously, I’ve always admired him. I feel like he’s one of the best players in all of baseball. I’ve always admired playing against him. And now, I’m super thrilled to be on his team and compete together for one goal and that’s to win baseball games and bring postseason baseball back to Boston.”
That message from Bregman has been consistent ever since joining the Red Sox. He made it clear that winning is his top priority no matter what position he plays.
Even though Devers was hesitant over the position change, there’s a mutual respect between him and Bregman. The two are closing in on a decade of sustained success in the big leagues with five All-Star appearances and three World Series rings between them.
After years of their teams going against one another, they now get to put their talents together with Cora planning to put Devers and Bregman at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively, in the lineup.
And if the two produce like they’ve been known to do, it sure will be easy to forget all about that bumpy start.
