Tottenham fans react to end of an era as Jan Vertonghen retires from football
Jan Vertonghen has called time on his playing career, and Tottenham fans have been quick to share their tributes. The Belgian defender remains one of the club’s most beloved figures.
Tottenham Hotspur and Belgium defender Jan Vertonghen has announced he will hang up his boots once the current campaign concludes.
The 37-year-old, who spent eight years at Spurs between 2012 and 2020, made 315 appearances for the club, twice earning a spot in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year.
He played a key role in the club’s journey to the Champions League final in 2019, cementing his place as one of the most reliable centre-backs of his era.
Last year, Vertonghen retired from international duty as Belgium’s most-capped player, having amassed 157 appearances for the Red Devils.
Unfortunately, injuries have plagued his final season at Anderlecht, restricting him to just five outings before deciding to call time on his career.
Tottenham Hotspur fans react to Jan Vertonghen’s retirement
A fan favourite at Spurs, Vertonghen formed a formidable partnership at the heart of defence with fellow Belgian Toby Alderweireld, who could also be nearing the end of his playing days due to injuries.
Following the announcement, Tottenham supporters have taken to social media to express their appreciation and gratitude for the club legend.
One supporter wrote: “Thanks for the memories, Jan. That goal against Dortmund is still so fresh in our minds.”
Another simply put: “An absolute legend of the game.” A different fan shared their admiration: “Thank you for everything, General.”
Another Spurs supporter reflected on Vertonghen’s impact: “Jan Vertonghen, for me, embodied a period of time that I most enjoyed watching my club. Looking forward to the inevitable day that he leads the boys from the dugout.”
One fan is hopeful for a return, stating: “Such a wonderful player who we were so lucky to have. Him or Ledley King are my favourite Spurs defenders of all time, can’t split the two. Shame we never got to say goodbye properly—need to get him back as a half-time guest next season.”
Another posed an interesting debate: “Our greatest centre-half of the Premier League era? I think he eclipses Ledley on consistency. What a player.”
A fitting farewell for a Spurs icon
Of course, we here at SpursWeb also send our best wishes to Jan as he prepares to step away from the pitch.
He was a fantastic servant to this club, and we were fortunate to witness his brilliant partnership with Toby. It almost feels poetic that the two could retire around the same time.
Maybe one day, they’ll line up together again in a Tottenham Legends match. One thing is certain—a warm welcome awaits Vertonghen whenever he returns to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
