Patriots Insider Dubious About Surprising Stefon Diggs Report
The Patriots soon will officially have Stefon Diggs on their roster.
But once the star wide receiver puts pen to paper in Foxboro, Mass., it will beg the question: When can Diggs play for New England?
Diggs’ status remains uncertain in wake of a torn ACL injury that limited his 2024 season with the Houston Texans to only eight games. After breaking the news about the four-time Pro Bowl selection’s agreement with the Patriots, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Diggs is “on track to return for Week 1” of the upcoming season.
That report seemingly surprised Boston Sports Journal’s Greg A. Bedard, who doesn’t sound very confident about Diggs’ chances of playing in New England’s season opener.
“That would be … optimistic,” Bedard posted on X in response to Schefter’s report.
Days before the Patriots agreed to terms with Diggs, ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported the 31-year-old was “ahead of schedule” in his recovery from knee surgery. But even if that’s the case, Mike Vrabel and company probably should err on the side of caution with Diggs, who figures to be critically important to New England’s offense once he’s fully healthy.
Because as the framework of Diggs’ reported contract with the Patriots suggested, the organization doesn’t view the accomplished pass-catcher as a one-year rental.
