UN calls for Inclusion of Afghanistan’s women Footballers in International Competitions
The UN has called for the inclusion of Afghanistan’s women footballers in international competitions, urging FIFA to support their participation.
Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Afghanistan, has called for the inclusion of Afghanistan’s female football players in international competitions.
On Wednesday, March 26th, Bennett urged the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) to break its silence on the gender-based repression by the Taliban and allow Afghan women footballers access to global tournaments.
Previously, the “Sport and Rights Union” had also requested FIFA to facilitate the participation of Afghan women footballers, currently in exile, in international matches. However, FIFA has yet to comment on the matter.
Following the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan, many female footballers were forced to flee the country, and they are now being deprived of the opportunity to participate in international competitions. The Taliban has imposed a blanket ban on all sports for Afghan women, severely limiting their freedom to engage in physical activities and represent their country on global platforms.
The continued suppression of Afghan female athletes has drawn global condemnation, with international organizations and human rights advocates calling for an immediate reversal of these restrictions. Afghan women athletes are demanding their right to participate in sports, emphasizing that their talents should not be stifled due to political or gender-based barriers.
Additionally, other Afghanistan’s athletes who have been banned from competing by the Taliban have also voiced their demands for respect of their rights.
These athletes, who were once a source of pride for Afghanistan, are now fighting for basic rights to compete and showcase their skills internationally, just as their male counterparts do. The international community must stand in solidarity with these athletes and support their rightful inclusion in global sports events.
