PPS, OSAA targeted by feds over transgender policy
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- The US Department of Education is opening a Title IX investigation into Portland Public Schools and the Oregon School Activities Association.
The federal DOE alleges a transgender student competed in a track-and-field competition. OSAA's gender identity participation policy states students are allowed to participate in programs that align with their "asserted gender identity."
The DOE said they won't allow Portland Public Schools to receive federal funds for violations they say don't align with protections of women and girls in schools.
PPS Superintendent Kimberlee Armstrong issued a statement shortly after the investigation was announced.
"I stand firm in our legal responsibilities, and I deeply value every student’s right to be treated with dignity, safety, and respect. PPS is in full compliance with Oregon state law, which may differ from federal guidance. We are actively working with our legal and state partners to navigate this complex legal landscape."
In a statement to KOIN 6 News, OSAA officials said they "received the investigation notification today. We are consulting with our legal counsel to respond to the Department of Education’s letter."
KOIN 6 News will have more information later in the day.
