OKC Pow Wow Club recovering from wind damage
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — High winds caused major damage across the state last week, including at the Oklahoma City Pow Wow Club. A lot of their damage was done to the roof surrounding the dance arena.
It's a place that many have called home for years and it happened just a few months before their 75th annual Pow Wow this summer.
"This site was given to my grandparents back when we first bought this land in '57. And my grandpa, my grandfather, built this structure," said Joe Poe, the Chairman of the OKC Pow Wow Club.
The roof was built in 2018 and the high winds ripped off about half of it.
Now, members are having to pick up the pieces.
They had a clean-up day this weekend, but said there's still a lot more to do before they host the Pow Wow in July.
"The roofs on those things are like little air foils on wings. So when the wind came through, it just lifted it up and pulled it out of the ground," said Poe.
Joe Poe said they need about $7,000 to fix the wood poles on which the roof was resting on. They believe they can salvage the roof panels.
Now, they're reaching out to their members and the public who enjoy the Pow Wows to volunteer their time or donate.
"That's where the funds are going to be. Anything left over from that will go into our pow wow that we're putting on in July," said Poe.
