Sooners Get Commitment from Nation's Top High School Girls Basketball Player
Oklahoma's women's basketball team got a commitment on Tuesday from the nation's top-ranked high school girls basketball recruit.
Aaliyah Chavez of Monterey High School in Lubbock, Texas, announced her commitment live on ESPN on Tuesday afternoon.
Chavez was named the Gatorade National High School Girls Player of the Year, and the Naismith National Player of the Year, averaging 35.3 points a game as a senior and leading her team to a state championship.
Chavez scored 4,796 points in her four year high school career.
“They have great coaches, coaches that I’ve been talking to since I was in eighth grade,” Chavez said on ESPN. “And just a great playing style. They match how I want to play. I want to play fast, and that’s why I chose it.”
Chavez had trimmed her final candidates to Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech, South Carolina, LSU and UCLA.
Chavez becomes the second #1-ranked recruit to commit to Oklahoma, joining Courtney Paris, who was the top-ranked high school player in the nation in 2005.
Chavez joins an OU freshman class that includes two other Top 100 recruits in Keziah Lofton of Bethany and Brooklyn Stewart of Colorado Springs.
Oklahoma advanced to the Sweet 16 with a 96-62 win over Iowa on Monday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
It's the Sooners' first Sweet 16 appearance since 2013.
