Dumbwaiter crushes man in NYC building: officials
MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) – A man was injured when a dumbwaiter crashed on top of him inside a building in New York City Tuesday, officials said.
The incident happened at a social club at 111 East 54th St. in Manhattan around 12:30 p.m., according to the FDNY.
A man was working on the dumbwaiter in the dumbwaiter shaft when it fell from the third floor and crushed him below, officials said.
"We had an approximately 32-year-old male who was working on the dumbwaiter when the dumbwaiter gave way and crushed him below on the ground level," said Division Chief Mark Bonilla of the FDNY's EMS Special Operations.
The worker became trapped underneath the dumbwaiter, officials said. Emergency crews responded and rescued him.
The man was conscious and alert, but he was in pain and was hospitalized with multiple injuries, officials said.
"I'm not sure of the weight of the dumbwaiter, but he had some crush injuries when it came down from the third floor," Bonilla said.
The New York City Department of Buildings is investigating the incident.
