LCRA park to celebrate bluebonnets
AUSTIN (KXAN) — The spring season is a time when wildflowers are in bloom. This is especially true of the official state flower of Texas, the lovely bluebonnets.
Sometimes the wildflower fields are flush with bluebonnets and other beautiful colors like Texas paintbrushes. It affords people the chance to find places where pictures can be taken of children and pets. You might even get a holiday card in December from people who have used the bluebonnets and other wildflowers to snap photos of the pretty Texas landscape.
KXAN Meteorologist Rich Segal spoke with Jenny Blackmon, the Lower Colorado River Authority parks operations manager for the west. Blackmon went on location to Muleshoe Bend Recreation Area in Spicewood to help promote an event coming up on Saturday, March 29.
It's called BLUEM (yes, it's spelled correctly). It will be your opportunity to visit Muleshoe Bend and be among the fields of bluebonnets and snap as many pictures as you want. It will be a family event as there will be opportunities for children, in addition to having a picture or two snapped in the bluebonnets, to have their faces painted and to visit the tame animals occupying a petting zoo.
The LCRA does ask that you respect the flowers by not picking them, not trampling on them and not driving on them. Blackmon calls this bluebonnets 101.
This session of Q and A also covered the specific bluebonnet and wildflower seasons. Sometimes we see lush fields of wildflowers adorning the landscape. But this year is different, as a definite lack of rain contributed to a slow start overall. Yes, there are some fields that are thriving with the pretty blue flowers, but other parts of the area are not so lucky.
LCRA invites all Texans and visitors to enjoy the majesty of this year's wildflowers.
