Djed Spence says Roy Keane is wrong about James Maddison at Tottenham
Djed Spence has now set the record straight about what James Maddison adds to the Tottenham dressing room, dispelling Roy Keane’s controversial assertion about the attacking midfielder.
James Maddison and Roy Keane have had a back-and-forth argument over recent weeks, with the Tottenham man responding with his goal celebrations after coming under criticism from the Man Utd legend.
The row began after Keane claimed that Maddison does not step up in big games and that his return to the side is not really significant for Spurs.
Heung-min Son has since asserted that Keane is wrong, with the Tottenham captain making it clear that the former Leicester man’s leadership is crucial to the side.
Djed Spence explains James Maddison’s impact at Tottenham
Djed Spence has now become the latest player to defend the Spurs vice-captain, admitting that he had his teammates look to Maddison as someone who can take games by the scruff of the neck.
When asked about the midfielder and Keane’s criticism, Spence told Rio Ferdinand Presents: “He’s a top player. I feel like, when he’s in the team, he’s someone that we can look to, and can make the difference. He’s a pivotal part of the team.”
The full-back also admitted that Maddison has taken him under his wing, always giving him full support and telling him what is expected of him.
When asked who in the Tottenham squad gives him useful advice, Spence responded: “I would say Madders. He’s there for me, makes sure I’m ready before games, even after games, and he’ll text me if he’s not in the squad because of injury, and be like, Djed, you know what to do today, or I want to see [x] from you. Madders supports me a lot.”
Maddison does not mind being scapegoated at Spurs
Speaking about the criticism from the media, Maddison admitted that he does feel unfairly targeted but insisted that he does not mind it.
The England international remarked that he is happy to be a lightning rod for criticism if that means that the younger players at Tottenham are spared.
When asked if he feels he is being scapegoated, Maddison said two weeks ago: “Yeah but that’s okay, I’d rather that than them talk about Archie [Gray] or Lucas [Bergvall]. I don’t mind taking the heat a little bit. I’m big enough and ugly enough now to take the hits and take the criticism because I know what I’m capable of.”
