Morning severe storms cause thousands of power outages and damage to Acadia Parish
TEPETATE, La. (KLFY) -- High wind and lightning from this morning's storms caused approximately 10,000 people in Acadia Parish to lose power and caused some damage to homes. One of the areas affected was Tepetate, a neighborhood community in the parish.
According to Mary Laurent with SLEMCO, around five substation structures in the parish fell because of the strong winds, causing the widespread outage. Residents Melany and Madison Langley said this has never happened to them before.
"We have never seen these high lines twisted and completely down, the damage that it has done around here," said Melany.
Melany, a longtime resident of Tepetate, said she has been through her fair share of hurricanes and floods, but this time felt different. She said she felt the storm was as strong as a tornado.
"The path doesn't make sense, I can't wait to see what the National Weather Service says because they had to have two things that happened," said Melany.
Madison, a homeowner, said she and her family were sleeping, when they were suddenly awoken by the severe storms. She said it sounded like the windows of her home were shaking--that was when she went outside and saw the damage to the roof of her home.
"I opened the door and that's when we saw the front end of our house cave in and fly off, we closed back the doors, and we didn't know what was coming next," said Madison. "This is a first for all of us and being young homeowners, it's hard."
Laurent tells News 10 crews have been in surrounding areas all day and have been making good progress. She said officials are now trying to restore feeders to homeowners. Depending on the amount of damage to your location, she said it could take several hours for all areas to be restored.
"As time goes on, I will be updating our Facebook page, any information that were given from the crews, we're gonna put that on our Facebook page so that we can isolate the different outages and try to get time frames there," said Laurent.
