Sinkholes on I-80: Emergency repair work and NJ TRANSIT travel discounts
NEWARK, N.J. (PIX11) -- Emergency repair work on I-80 is underway following the discovery of multiple sinkholes in Morris County.
Over the weekend, Gov. Phil Murphy toured the construction area with U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. Murphy estimates two of the westbound lanes will reopen within the week. He estimates the eastbound lanes will require another six to eight weeks of work.
To assist commuters impacted by the emergency repair work, NJ TRANSIT is offering a 50% discount on roundtrip travel.
“While we work around-the-clock to repair the roadway, we are providing every possible travel alternative including on NJ TRANSIT trains,” said Governor Phil Murphy. “By offering these discounts on the trains, we will get vehicles off the road and provide residents another option to get to work or school, and back home at the end of the day.”
The discounts were made available starting Monday, for customers traveling from Hackettstown, Mount Olive, Netcong, Lake Hopatcong, and Mount Arlington. Customers departing from those stations do not need to purchase a fare when boarding.
Customers at these stations should notify the train crew if they are transferring to Newark Broad Street Station or Summit Station to continue their journey to Penn Station in New York. They will receive a transfer ticket to present to the crew of the connecting train.
Customers will only need to purchase a one-way ticket back to one of the five stations.
For ticket information or to check schedules, visit the NJ TRANSIT website or download the NJ TRANSIT mobile app.
