Expanded ice rink unveiled in Schenectady County
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A renovated ice rink was unveiled in Schenectady County on Monday. The Schenectady County Ray Wemple Memorial Rink boasts several updates and expansions.
The project first broke ground in April 2024. Since then, the ice rink has gained over 4,000 square feet, including four new locker rooms, an additional changing room and expanded restroom facilities. The front entrance was also expanded, the exterior facade was modernized and a new activities room and around 30 parking spaces were added.
"This updated facility reflects our commitment to providing top-notch spaces for our community to come together and create lasting memories," Chair of the Schenectady County Legislature Gary Hughes said, emphasizing that the new rink will boost sports tourism and the local economy. "With enhanced amenities and a more welcoming environment, we're proud to offer this modern facility to families, teams and visitors for years to come.
The facility has also been renamed to honor Ray Wemple, a member of the Schenectady County community. Wemple served in a number of local roles, including at the Schenectady Police Department, Carman Volunteer Fire Department and as the Schenectady County Emergency 911 Director. He was also heavily involved with the Schenectady Youth Hockey Association.
The Schenectady County Ray Wemple Memorial Rink, located at the county airport in Glenville, currently supports more than a dozen Schenectady Youth Hockey Association teams, numerous adult hockey leagues and two high school teams. The facility also offers several ice skating, learn-to-skate and introductory hockey programs.
